Early Pregnancy or Viability scan (7 - 11 wks)
At the Edinburgh Clinic, an early pregnancy or viability scan can be performed as early as the seventh week of pregnancy.
An early pregnancy scan can:
- Confirm that your baby is developing appropriately
- Check that your baby is in the correct position within the womb
- Provide an accurate guide to how long you have been pregnant
- Identify a multiple pregnancy
This scan is useful if you are unsure of the last date of your period and provides vital reassurance if you are experiencing pain or bleeding or if you have had a previous miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. In addition, an Early Pregnancy scan is a wonderful opportunity to study your baby's development during the early stages of pregnancy and to listen to your baby’s heart beating.
In most cases, this scan can be carried out abdominally but, if the baby is very small, it may be necessary to perform a transvaginal (internal) scan. There would be an additional charge for this service.
