Having trained in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Birmingham and the USA, Dr MacGilchrist was appointed to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in 1999. His special interest is the liver. He has played a major role in the establishment and continued success of the Scottish Liver Transplant Unit.
He has a wide clinical practice which encompasses all areas of both liver and gastrointestinal disease, including diagnostic and therapeutic upper gastrointestinal, colonoscopic and biliary endoscopy.
He is currently the secretary of the Scottish Society of Gastroenterology and a member of Council of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.
He has previously served as the secretary of the Scottish Society of Physicians and as a non-executive director of UK Transplant.
