Professional profile
Since being appointed as a Consultant Urological surgeon in 2001, Alan has provided a specialist urology service with particular interests in prostate diseases and kidney surgery and became Lead Clinician for Urology in 2007.
He has undertaken fellowship training in minimal access surgery (MAS) techniques at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, and the University Hospital, Leipzig. He has lead the development of the programme in Urology at local and national level.
He has the broadest range of minimal access surgery skills in Scotland and has performed over 250 laparoscopic nephrectomies and 200 laparoscopic prostatectomies. He also has training in Green Light Laser prostatectomy.
He undertakes rigorous audit of his surgical outcomes and contributes to national audits by the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS).
He has published many peer-reviewed papers and remains involved in research into prostate disease with collaborative projects at Edinburgh and Heriot Watt Universities.
A former Programme Director of the East of Scotland training Programme in Urology, Alan remains very active in skills training for minimal access surgery, organising and participating in several courses which are run for BAUS.
Other information
In 2006 Alan helped establish Prostate Scotland with his wife and a group of like-minded individuals. The charity aims to raise awareness and educate Scottish men about the prostate and the diseases that affect it. Following significant growth, the Charity was appointed its first director in 2008. 2009 will mark the launch of Prostate Scotland's website and information campaign.
Whilst work commitments currently demand a lot of time, Alan enjoys family life with his wife Alison and their son and daughter. When time permits he plays golf, works in the garden and enjoys a bit of shooting.
