flu jab at The Edinburgh Clinic

As we leave the summer behind and enter the cold, dark months of the year it’s time to talk about the flu vaccine.

Who should get the flu vaccine? The CDC recommends annual influenza vaccinations for everyone age 6 months or older. Vaccination is especially important for people at high risk of influenza complications, including: Pregnant women.

The Edinburgh Clinic is now exclusively offering the winter flu vaccine from September to November. The vaccine will be available to patients from 18 to 64 years.

Please read our checklist to ensure you are suitable for the vaccine before booking an appointment:

  • Are you pregnant or breast feeding?

  • Are you allergic to eggs?

  • Have you had a reaction to a flu vaccine in the past?

  • Are you taking blood thinning medication such as warfarin or have a bleeding disorder?

If you do answer yes to any of these questions then we would advise you speak with your GP who will advise further.

The vaccine

The vaccine, commonly known as the winter flu jab, usually takes from 10 days to take effect and should help protect you from flu for around a year. You have to get immunised every year because the viruses change constantly and your immunity reduces over time.  The flu vaccine does not give you flu, but it can stop you catching it.

How effective is the flu vaccine?

The flu vaccine offers protection against the flu virus and is particularly important for people with medical conditions. The vaccine does not stop all flu viruses, however following vaccination, if you do contract a virus it is likely to be milder and more short-lived than it would have been otherwise.

Flu vaccine side effects

Serious side effects of the injected flu vaccine are very rare. You may have a mild fever and aching muscles for a couple of days after having the vaccine, and your arm may be a bit sore where you were injected.

How safe is the flu vaccine?

The flu vaccine we use is used across the NHS and has a very high safety record.

When can I have the flu vaccine?

At The Edinburgh Clinic we are offering flu vaccine clinics throughout September and October with a Registered Nurse.  Appointments are for 15 minutes and cost £29.50.
