Here at The Edinburgh Clinic our Dental Surgeon and Facial Aesthetician Dr Nirmal Shah holds regular bi-weekly clinics with prospective clients to discuss the options available and answer questions.
“I’m always delighted to spend time with people who are interested in finding out more about what Facial Aesthetics can do for them.
Through careful discussion and analysis of both the features of face itself and the client’s feelings about what they want to achieve, we are able to agree on goals which are both desirable and realistic.
This then informs our decisions on the best approach to take, whether that is through fillers, anti-wrinkle injections or some combination of the two.”
Dr Nirmal Shah
Anti-Wrinkle Injections (often known by the brand name Botox® though other treatments are also available) work by relaxing the muscles of the face and other areas. By blocking nerve transmissions from key areas of the skin, the injections cause wrinkles to appear less pronounced and skin to look smoother.
In contrast, Dermal Fillers work by adding volume and shape to specific areas of the face, restoring the plumpness of younger skin. This effect can help smooth the wrinkles from within, as well as offering opportunities for making carefully crafted alterations to any unwanted features the client may have, such as sunken cheeks or thin lips.
It really depends on what outcomes you are hoping to achieve – for instance if your main aim is simply to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, creases, crows feet or laughter lines, then Anti-Wrinkle Injections are likely to be the best approach for you.
By relaxing the right muscles, the appearance of frowning or ageing skin can be reduced giving the face a fresher, more welcoming look.
If you’re looking to make slightly more significant changes to your face however, Fillers offer a wider range of options which go beyond simply reducing the appearance of lines.
Through the precise application of Fillers, volume can be added to areas where it is considered lacking, allowing for the sculpting of fuller lips, enhanced cheeks and reduced depth and visibility from small scars such as those caused by acne. And of course Fillers can also be applied to any wrinkles and lines you may wish to have dealt with at the same time as your other treatment.
Results for both types of Facial Aesthetics treatment vary from one client to another, but in general most people will be likely to require some further sessions in order to maintain the results of their procedure.
The results of Anti-Wrinkle Injections will usually last approximately three to six months, which can be refreshed by Dr Shah and his team. Past experience has shown than patients who have had two or three such refreshers sometimes also notice that the results begin to last for longer periods.
Since there is a range of different types of Dermal Filler, results can range similarly in their longevity, with some Fillers lasting for relatively short periods while others have an effect for longer or can even be permanent. A key part of your consultation with Dr Shah is the discussion on how long your results can be expected to remain.
Absolutely. Helping you to fully understand and feel comfortable with the procedures on offer is an important part of your consultation.
Thankfully, recovery time for both types of Facial Aesthetic treatment is short, with Anti-Wrinkle Injections having almost no delay at all. In fact many of our clients who have opted for this treatment leave our clinic and then continue as normal with their daily routine.
Things take a little longer with Filler treatments, once again varying depending on precisely which type of Filler has been used. However, other than some swelling and occasionally a little facial discomfort which could last for a few days, you should find that there is very little impact on your freedom to get on with your life.
