Our Consultant Neurosurgeon Mr Imran Liaquat discusses the use of the MRI: “The MRI scan helps to distinguish whether clinical symptoms of “trapped nerve” is due to disc prolapse/herniated disc or general stenosis (narrowing) of the spine due to wear and tear (Spondolysis).
Sometimes it is a combination of the two. In older patients such as retired golfers, it is usually stenosis and in younger patients disc prolapse. We have to correlate the scan findings with the patient’s symptoms as a lot of scans may show disc bulges or nerve entrapment which are coincidental and not the cause of the symptoms. This is why a scan needs to be followed by a consultation so the consultant can assess and see whether the clinical symptoms correlate with scan findings.”
