Dr Derry is a Consultant Neurologist based in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Edinburgh. He also holds a position within the Department of Sleep Medicine, Edinburgh, and is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer and NHS Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh.
Dr Derry is actively involved in the care of patients with full a full range of neurological conditions, and his NHS practice is based around general and acute neurology service in NHS Lothian.
His particular area of interest is epilepsy, and he is one of two Consultant Neurologists managing the regional Edinburgh and South East Scotland Epilepsy Service. He also has expertise and interest in the diagnosis and management of neurological disorders of sleep, including parasomnias, movement disorders of sleep and sleep-related epilepsies. He is currently engaged in clinical research into interactions between sleep disorders and epileptic seizures, and has authored a number of scientific publications and given invited lectures at national and international meetings in this area.
Dr Derry graduated in medicine from the Royal London Hospital Medical College (University of London) with distinction in 1996. He undertook his clinical training in neurology in London, Aberdeen and Edinburgh. He gained subspecialist experience in all aspects of epilepsy and sleep medicine during 5 year clinical and research fellowship at the Austin Hospital and University of Melbourne, Australia, during which he completed his PhD. He was awarded the International League Against Epilepsy (UK) Gowers’ Young Physician of the Year award in 2006. He has worked in Edinburgh since 2009.
