Clinical interests:
I perform routine cataract surgery & lens implantation under local anaesthesia (but happy to offer General Anaesthesia for patient choice).
In addition I am experienced in performing complex cataract surgery and as a recognised Vitreo-Retinal surgeon I am referred patients for management of post operative complications.
My Vitreo-retinal experience enables me to manage all forms of Retinal Detachment, Diabetic Vitreous Haemorrhage and Macular disorders such as Macular Hole and Epiretinal membranes.
I also perform Vitrectomy procedures for infants and Children at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh.
I routinely manage patients with Diabetic Retinopathy both surgically and with retinal laser. I can offer intravitreal injections of Lucentis for Diabetic Macular Oedema.

My basic training includes posts in Accident & Emergency, Neurology and Plastic Surgery in Glasgow. I trained at Senior House Officer level at the Birmingham & Midland Eye Hospital followed by Registrar training at the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion, Edinburgh. I became a Senior Registrar in Edinburgh and gained further sub-specialty training in Vitreo-Retinal Disorders in Edinburgh. Further Training in Vitreo-Retinal Surgery was gained at the Lions Eye institute, Perth, Western Australia. I was appointed as a Consultant in NHS Lothian in January 1998.
I have 15 years’ experience in private practice.
During my consultant career I have held the following posts- Training Programme Director, and Regional Advisor. Scottish lead for Modernising Medical Careers, Lead Examiner for Royal College of Surgeons Ed. Chairman of the Training Committee Royal College of Surgeons of Ed, re-introduced the FRCS Ed exam in Ophthalmology for international graduates, and created new international exam centres. Member of The Training Committee of The Royal College Ophthalmologists.
I have considerable management experience and currently hold the Clinical Director post for Ophthalmology at NHS Lothian.
