Training & background:

Consultant Medical Psychotherapists are medical professionals who are trained in Psychiatry and then further specialize in Psychotherapy.  We are specifically qualified to consider the biological, social and psychological origins of mental distress and treat each accordingly using both medications, if needed, in combination with psychotherapeutic interventions.

I have specific training in Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (both long and short term)  Group Therapy and Mentalisation Based Therapy both in group and individual settings for each.   I am currently working in Eating Disorders in NHS Lothian as well as the Psychotherapy Department at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital. I have specific experience in the SCID-5 diagnosis and treatments of Personality Disorders.

In addition, I have many years experience in treating people with depressive disorders, anxiety disorders and people with more complex long standing interpersonal/internal struggles using a psychodynamic approach where medication and other brief counseling or psychotherapy has only partially helped and where a longer time in therapy may be needed either as an individual or part of a group.
