The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is the ligament that keeps the knee stable. Damage to the anterior cruciate ligament is a very common injury, especially amongst athletes. About half of all injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament occur along with damage to other structures in the knee, such as articular cartilage, meniscus, or other ligaments. Knee arthroscopy, also known as keyhole surgery, can diagnose and treat problems relating to the knee joint. Injuries that can be treated using an arthroscopy include a torn meniscus, which is a fairly common injury (cartilage between bones in the knee).
If you have injured your anterior cruciate ligament and other parts of the knee, you may require surgery to regain full function of your knee. This will depend on several factors, such as the severity of your injury and your activity level.
