What is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is a common condition where the edges of the eyelids become red and swollen (inflamed). Blepharitis can develop at any age, and symptoms can include crusting, irritation, red eyelids that stick together and a burning, gritty sensation in your eyes. Unfortunately, there is no cure and once it develops it can cause repeated episodes. The cause of blepharitis is not known in most cases but, although it is not an infection, it can be caused by a reaction to the bacteria that live naturally on the eyelid skin.

People with skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis and rosacea are more prone to developing blepharitis. Treatment includes establishing a daily eyelid-cleaning routine to help control the symptoms. More severe cases of blepharitis may require antibiotic ointment, antibiotic drops, steroid eye drops or antibiotic tablets.
