What is an early pregnancy scan?

An early pregnancy scan can be carried out between weeks seven to twelve of pregnancy, at which point it can be used to:

  • check that your baby is in the correct position within the womb
  • confirm that your baby is developing appropriately
  • identify a multiple pregnancy
  • provide an accurate guide to how long you have been pregnant

This scan is useful to tell you how far advanced you are in your pregnancy, and aims to provide reassurance if you are experiencing pain or bleeding or if you have had a previous miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. An early pregnancy scan is a wonderful opportunity to study your baby’s development during the early stages of pregnancy and to listen to your baby’s heart beating.

In most cases, this scan can be carried out trans-abdominally, however, it may be necessary to perform a transvaginal (internal) scan, with your permission, and your specialist sonographer is fully trained to provide this for you.
