The non invasive prenatal test (NIPT – also known as harmony / serenity test) is a new option in prenatal screening. Using a blood test, the risk of certain chromosomal conditions that can have a high associated incidence of miscarriage and birth disabilities or defects can be detected with high accuracy, including:
The non invasive prenatal test can also be used to sex the baby at no extra cost. At The Edinburgh Clinic the non invasive prenatal test test is supported by our Private GP who contacts each patient individually to discuss the result.
The non invasive prenatal test is a new option for prenatal assessment that offers near total accuracy in the diagnosis of chromosomal conditions, such as Down Syndrome. When compared to standard nuchal testing options, the non invasive prenatal test is almost 10% more accurate in the diagnosis of Down’s. Although prenatal screening tests can carry a false negative/positive ratio, the non invasive prenatal test has a very low false/positive rate. What’s more, as the test is non-invasive, it does not pose a direct risk to the foetus, which can be present in invasive testing such as in amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS). Although the non invasive prenatal test is highly accurate in the diagnosis of several key chromosomal conditions, it does not rule out all fetal abnormalities.
The non invasive prenatal test is suitable for a wide range of pregnancies. For women undergoing IVF treatment, or having a child in later life, a prenatal test that offers near 100% accuracy in the diagnosis of congenital conditions can provide great relief.
